Downer, the prime contractor working for the Australian Defence Force, needed to improve the airstrips at the RAAF Base in Williamtown, Newcastle to accommodate the new fleet of F-35 Lightning II fighter jets. The project budget was $165m and included funding for a new runway and improvements to the existing runway systems.
We dispatched an Adept Final Trim Grader and our best operator to complete the project. He prepared and trimmed each section of the subgrade and placed the cement-treated-gravel all within tolerance, required time frames and budget for the new runway. The job was complicated because it was staged: every section had to be finished before we could move on to the next portion.
Complicating things was the fact that the military base was fully operational and the runways were still being used. That fact created small windows for gravel placement and finishing.
Despite the many challenges, we finished the project on schedule. After 12 months on the project, the client was happy enough with our work to contract us for another project.
